The srx sports futuristic styling that stands out in a sea of boxy sport-utilities and minivans that fill school parking lots. And it drives more like a european sports sedan than it does a minivan or sport utility. still, the srx, which goes head-to-head the bmw x5 and mercedes-benz m-class, is strictly for affluent families. It starts at about $39,000, but it can be loaded up with a host of available features so that it closes in on the $60,000 mark. we like the stable yet responsive handling and smooth, extremely quiet ride. The v8 versions offer smooth, confident power, while the all-wheel-drive models are among the best-handling vehicles in the class on snow and ice. The edgy, angular styling is distinctive and the interior is stylish, comfortable and practical, though not warm and inviting. lineupthe cadillac srx comes with two rows of seats to carry five people or with an optional power third-row seat to accommodate up to seven passengers. Two engines are available, a v6 and a v8. Both are paired with a five-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually without a clutch. The srx has standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. That positions it between a similarly equipped lexus gx 470 at $46,715 and the mercedes ml500 at $49,235 and below the bmw x5 4. 4 at $53,445. All of cadillac's new vehicles have adopted its 'art and science' design philosophy. When cadillac marketers, designers and engineers dug into the company's 100 years of history, they found two prevailing themes had made cadillac successful in its glory days: distinctive, futuristic styling a la the 1959 eldorado with its exuberant tailfins and firsts in technology, such as the self-starter. Love it or hate it, however, the styling is bold and unabashedly american. The srx looks and feels more like a station wagon than a sport utility, however. At 41 inches, the srx has more rear legroom than other midsize luxury sport-utilities and as much rear hiproom as the roomy acura mdx. the srx comes standard with two rows of seats for five passengers. The second row powers back and forth for added legroom or added cargo space. The cargo area in the five-passenger model can be outfitted with storage spaces built into the floor under hatch doors. an optional third-row bench seat provides accommodations for up to seven passengers. The third row is not available on many of its competitors, including the bmw x5, infiniti fx, or lexus rx 330. But the third-row seat provides less room, including legroom, than the acura mdx or volvo xc90. The third-row seat folds flat into the floor with the push of a button near the rear hatch or on the pillar just behind the second row of seats. The third row comes with storage bins and cupholders. Each row of seats sits higher than the next, like those in a movie theater, so everyone can see out. luggage space is about average for the class. Roof rails come standard to expand cargo-carrying capability. storage cubbies abound and include covered front door compartments, front door map pockets, front seatback pockets, front center console with two compartments, a bin behind the front console, glove box with shelf, covered cup holders in the front seat center console and second seat fold-down armrest with cupholders. Srx also has rear coat hooks accessible from the rear passenger doors or liftgate, good for picking up dry cleaning. in addition to the power third-row seat, the literally coolest feature of the srx, which no competitor has, is its supersized sunroof. Push the button to slide open the ultra view sunroof and front and rear passengers can enjoy 5. 6 feet of open air for front and rear passengers. driving impressionthe cadillac srx rides on the same sigma global architecture used for the cts and the upcoming 2005 sts, which replaces the seville. It is an outstanding architecture in terms of structural rigidity, which gives it stable yet responsive handling. The srx delivered a smooth, extremely quiet ride, along with spirited handling on highways and twisty mountain curves of arizona. its next-generation northstar 4. 6-liter v8 delivers plenty of power, rated at 315 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque. The srx v8 we drove through the mountains of arizona delivered smooth, confident power. We have not tested the v6 model, but cadillac engineers say the v6 versions will be capable of 0-60 mph acceleration in the low 7-second range. both engines come with five-speed automatic transmissions, though different ones. Both use electronics for engine braking and brake assist to adjust shifts on uphill and downhill grades, something we encountered frequently on the arizona test drive. The downhill adjustments were disconcerting and unnatural, not what we would expect. Gear shifts were stretched out longer than felt comfortable. The transmissions offer a manual-shift mode allowing the driver to change gears. cadillac engineers have focused heavily on the srx's all-weather capability. To begin with, it has a noticeably lower center of gravity than most sport utilities and a long wheelbase. In addition, cadillac claims the srx can be outfitted with more electronic dynamic controls than any vehicle general motors has ever sold. It certainly fits that description with its sporty handling, exhilarating acceleration and powerful braking. Their names are like alphabet soup: cts, sts, xlr, srx. But driving one of them confirms cadillac now builds world-class automobiles. it was the cts that kicked off this renaissance. Introduced as a 2003 model, its edgy styling immediately grabbed the spotlight. Praise of its dynamic qualities quickly followed from the automotive press, which focused on its superb rear-wheel-drive chassis. Two years later the cts is improved and more refined. The 2005 cts comes with a choice of these new vvt v6 engines, a new 2. 8-liter v6 and a 3. 6-liter v6 introduced as an optional engine last year. Nor would it feel out of place on a race track. Cts-v is only available with a manual shifter. for 2005, a new six-speed manual gearbox is also available for the regular cts models. Both the 2. 8-liter and 3. 6-liter v6 engines are available with the six-speed manual or the more popular five-speed automatic. We'd march immediately to the responsive automatic if the manual wasn't so good. The 2005 cts also gets a new instrument cluster and a choice of new 16-inch wheels. To put this power to the ground, cts-v gets 18-inch wheels, grippy tires, big brembo brakes, and other high-performance tweaks. walkaroundthe cts was the first production car using cadillac's new art & science design vocabulary first shown on the evoq concept car. The design is a festival of wedges, sharp junctions and chiseled angles that can be seen throughout the latest generation of cadillacs. The edgy design is distinctive. There's no confusing a cadillac with anything else. the cts refines the cadillac tradition of vertical headlamps and taillamps that dates back to 1965. Viewed from the front, the cts is imposing, with its large louvered grille framed by sharp, vertical headlamps. The front air dam is all business, with simple rectangular foglights and a long narrow intake near the skirt. The cts has a short, high deck with tall, vertical taillamps. The view from the rear is broken up by the indentation cut widely around the license plate in a contrasting color. The cts-v looks a bit better here by using body colored plastic. interiorthe angular theme continues inside, although it was softened for 2004. The cts is sold in europe and the interior reflects that. It projects an idea that driving is serious business. Visually, it's an austere cabin, lacking the warmness of the new cadillac sts. The interior is a mix of high-tech textures, some of it dimpled like a golf ball. Many of the materials are soft and interesting to the touch. There's good support for the driver's right leg, and where the right shin touches it feels soft. There's a good support for the left leg as well, with a good dead pedal for the left foot. the three-spoke steering wheel contains buttons for the sound system and cruise control, and is deliciously padded in leather for all but the part of the rim between about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, which is trimmed in wood. changing the temperature, adjusting the stereo, and operating the navigation system are easy and convenient in the cts. The center stack juts out from the rest of the dash, with the elaborate gps navigation system at the top center location. Climate controls are at the bottom, controlled by amber-lighted pictograms. the stereo works well, allowing quick and easy switching from a news channel on xm satellite radio to music on fm to traffic on am to a cd. The small triangular speakers for the optional bose system are mounted on the a pillar, and look cool. Onstar is provided, allowing drivers to make hands-free, voice-activated calls. A tall driver or passenger will be comfortable in front and only slightly cramped in the rear. The rear seats are comfortable for two or three passengers, offering good leg room, though lacking in thigh support. There is a convenient pass-thru tunnel between the rear seats, to the trunk, if the split folding rear seats are ordered. driving impressionthe cts drives wonderfully around town. It cruises comfortably on the freeway and feels at home on winding roads. the new 3. 6-liter v6 is silky smooth when cruising, less so at full throttle. It's a thoroughly modern engine with a 60-degree aluminum block, double overhead cams, variable-valve timing, electronic throttle control, six coils and a structural oil pan. The 2. 8-liter v6 vvt is a modified version of the 3. 6-liter v6 with vvt. The 2. 8 and 3. 6-liter v6 earn the same epa-estimated mileage of 18/27 mpg city/highway and run on regular 87 octane. Choosing between them is a matter of power versus cost. The five-speed automatic transmission is superb. In normal mode, it seems to shift a lot, especially at a casual pace. Selecting the sport mode changes the transmission's attitude, giving it sharp and decisive response. The automatic is an excellent choice for the cts. The cts comes with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. the front and rear tires are a full two inches farther apart in track width for 2008, so the general body shape is wider, and a great deal more aggressive looking, with exaggerated front and rear wheel flares. in addition to the traditional 3. 6-liter v6, there's a whole new 3. 6-liter, 24-valve v6 engine with direct fuel injection that makes 15 percent more power. It looks like it's hungry for red meat. Its new levels of grip, handling and steering were modeled after the bmw 530i sedan, and it was developed by the cadillac engineers on bmw's home ground, the 14-mile, 73-turn nurburgring circuit in germany. lineupthe new 2008 cadillac cts 32,245) comes standard with a 263-horsepower v6. Altogether, this is a much, much better looking car than the previous cts, with more adventurous lines everywhere, especially in the gracefully sloping rear roof section, which isn't as harshly angular as on the previous edition. interiorthe crazy-quilt nature of the original cts interior, with lots of different textures but all in black, has been thrown away, and it's been replaced by a very nice new design for 2008 using black and brushed metal and chrome, very contemporary and very space efficient. We really appreciated the range of adjustment offered by the power seats and the power steering column adjustments; we've always felt that all cars should have tilt-and-telescope columns for ultimate comfort and proper driving position. Using the navigation screen, it's easy to switch back and forth between the three broadcast and three stored-music formats by simply touching the screen, and the blue display is large enough to be read from the back seat. We think it's one of the best overall, most fun to use sound systems we've ever used in a car. driving impressionthe 2008 cadillac cts is a responsive sports sedan with excellent handling and high-speed stability yet it's smooth and quiet when cruising. the more powerful of the two available engines is a new direct-injection v6 that produces 304 horsepower. The next-generation cadillac cts is a small sedan that promises more horsepower, optional all-wheel-drive, an impressively finished benchmark interior and one large dose of style. While the 2008 cts shares the current cars 113. 4 inch wheelbase, most of its other dimensions are slightly larger. It comes standard with 17-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, with 18-inch wheels available as an option.
